Scientists Find Secret Ingredient For Making Lots Of Money – Testosterone

Scientists have found the two secret ingredient for making and losing lots of money – testosterone and cortisol.

Researchers from Cambridge University have concluded the more testosterone a trader has, the richer they’ll become.

They measured levels of testosterone and cortisol (a stress hormone) in 17 traders at a City of London bank for eight consecutive business days. They found that those traders with higher testosterone levels in the morning were most likely to make money on the day’s trading. One trader hit a six-day “winning streak” during which he made more than double his daily profit. During that time his testosterone levels went up 74%.

The team also found that cortisol levels among the traders increased when their takings became more volatile and the market generally was less stable.

According to Bloomberg, scientists have actually linked testosterone and cortisol levels to a traders profit and loss volatility. When a traders levels of testosterone are high they’re confident and consistent. On the other hand, when traders generate cortisol in excess, they can suffer from anxiety, selective recall, and experience losses.

Research shows that traders who are in daily possession of more testosterone attack the day with vim, vigor and risk on their minds while traders who have higher levels of Cortisol, a hormone most associated with stress, are more cautious and less likely to make aggressive trades, and often become less successful.

How would I use this information to my advantage? Would I believe my testosterone was the only factor to make me a successful trader?

Having studied human behaviour and the mindset of wealth for 17 years I will say this. ALL human behavior is governed by your values and beliefs. Give me two people with different values, SUBJECT A with a high value on building wealth and loves the whole process, the math’s, the accumulation etc, BUT hates working out and refuses to do it. SUBJECT B who’s wealth building value is low on his hierarchy of values, but trades because he wants the money for what he really values in life and does strength training, I will take subject A every time. I care not how high his testosterone level is or his age.

Your values, beliefs and having a compelling reason will determine your financial success over every other factor. That is the core message of this site. Now, introduce a 3rd person, SUBJECT C, who has a super high value on building wealth, the markets, business, has aligned beliefs, etc AND they love strength training, I will pick this person EVERY TIME! We are talking about putting the statistical odds in your favor by working out, as long as you have the right values and beliefs.

If testosterone was the only factor to consider when building wealth, then all bodybuilders would be rich if they pursued it. The reason they are not is because they do not have the values, beliefs and reason to support the accumulation of it. Billionaire Richard Branson when asked if he had one tip for people to be more successful and profitable what would it be, he replied, get up early and workout.

THE SECRET RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SEX DRIVE AND WEALTH.

Testosterone is produced mainly by the testes in men and the ovaries in women, as well as by the adrenal gland. Testosterone is the hormone which is responsible for your sex drive.

Napoleon Hill stated that in his observations of the 500 richest men when he wrote Think And Grow Rich, that the 500 men had very high sex drives, but they poured that sexual energy into creating wealth rather than pursuing sex.

Between the ages of 30 and 80 testosterone levels decline; levels can reach as low as 20 percent of what it was during your youth. A decrease in testosterone can lead to a number of illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes. There are a number of ways in which you can increase the levels of testosterone in your body and weight lifting is one of them.

Weight bearing exercises aid in increasing testosterone levels and decreases the amount of cortisol present in the body. The higher your testosterone levels the lower your cortisol levels, and vice versa.

To gain maximum advantage from weight bearing exercise, you should concentrate on performing exercises for large muscle groups. The body responds to heavy weights by releasing the human growth hormone testosterone, which allows you to lift heavier weights. Focus on using heavy weights performing five repetitions on compound exercises. Examples of compound exercises include bench presses for the chest, squats for the legs and barbell curls for the biceps.

Weightlifting also activates production of the stress hormone cortisol which cancels out testosterone, to avoid this keep weight lifting routines under 35 minutes.

P.S.

Testosterone also acts as a fat burning substance which promotes weight loss. Testosterone also aids in the production of lean muscle tissue, your body will burn more calories with excess muscle because muscle is an active tissue and requires maintenance.

35 mins doing weight training exercises in the gym 2-3x per week to get richer, burn fat and get in shape….hhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Makes a lot of sense when you consider the more testosterine we produce the more active we are naturally, hense our metabolism will also be increased.

I had been feeling like I was stuck in a rut, so last Friday, I decided to move my workout from 4pm, after market close, to early morning, 7am, before my trading day. After this week, I already can feel a difference in my mindset during trading. After reading this article, I am going to increase my weights to feel the BURN, so I can make more money!

Balderdash! 8 days is not the least bit statistically significant.. nor does the presence of one hormone or the other indicate causality.

Additionally, the brief summary of the article even confuses testosterone with human growth hormone and they are quite different.

Nothing here with even a whiff of credible scientific substance.

Randy…. this is a summary of information, and not ALL the available information regarding testosterone and profitability. How many people do you think would read multiple studies if i posted them here, verses, a sample of the information? It’s a blog to give people a heads up. Testosterone and IGF-1 (growth hormone) are two seperate hormones and are different. Both Growth Hormone and Testosterone create fat loss. In YOUR mind, what is the confusion?

    Hi Patrick

great conclusions in that article, many thanks.

I also will start in gym, so I wonder, if you maybe can recommend any weight training program/plan?

    thanks
    cheers

To take this ‘scientific conclusion’ to heart is to be easily swayed by emotion….. it MAY work for you, but more likely if you THINK it will, it will. So how do explain older traders who still make money despite sedentary lifestyles…. or young bucks who really believe they can whip the world of trading and go on to lose their asses???

I understand as women age their testosterone levels increase and estrogen levels decrease. What part does testosterone play in the possibility that women are more successful as they age due to this change? Of course there are many, many reasons women are more successful as they age but if would be interesting to study testosterone levels in successful women at different ages!

Hi Patrick, I believe Van Tharp says in ‘How to build a winning trading system’ that when we are stressed, we can handle on 2 pieces of information at a time – but when we are calm we can handle up to 7. He makes it quite clear that, in his opinion, stress (adrenaline) and trading are not good combinations. However, I think that exercise OUTSIDE of the trading environment is a different story – naturally all the endorphins that are released will make a person feel more positive and spritely, and help put people in a good state of mind to trade. I think that’s slightly different from getting a good profit from being ‘high’ on testosterone – it’s an issue of calm reflection vs boystrous abandon whilst trading. It would be interesting to see the researchers data in more detail. thanks, Mike

Mike, Van has worked with more succcessful traders than most people, and modelled their thoughts, behaviours and actions. In his 17 steps to successful trading…… guess what step 16 is?

16, Get your body in top condition. You mind can only be in top condition if your body is in top condition. There are various procedures for doing so, including both diet and exercise. Your job is to decide what’s right for you.

Is this Patrick? (admin) I would take ‘c’ also (I noticed that C has ‘SUPER’ high value on building wealth; however that didn’t seem to be one of the choices in the study (that was your addition to the article)! I don’t DISagree with the article, but don’t think that ‘T’ or lack thereof, is as important as it implies, (but then I DON’T REALLY KNOW) and having an 8 day study with 17 subjects seems really insignificant for a ‘study’; more like anecdotal evidence to me. But, now I think I’m arguing just because I LIKE critical thinking! How is my friend Vicki (of OMAHA) doing, she is a pistol and an interesting person! Jerry

  • admin says:

Hi Jerry ….Yep, admin is me on this one. I agree with you, testosterone is not enough, as stated in my comment about bodybuilders and wealth. It requires, values, belief and a compelling reason. Testosterone just helps. There are lots of studies regarding testosterone and wealth out there all saying the same thing… I just thought I will bring this to everyone’s attention to give you an additional edge. In my gym there is a billionaire I know that trains every day, and a lot of multi millionaires. In fact most of the millionaires I know work out. When I ask them why they work out, they all say the same thing…”It helps me perform at work and gives me an edge”. From my own results, I have seen when I train in the gym, I am a better trader, more focused, more driven, more determined and more profitable. If that’s not enough evidence for me, then nothing is.

Patrick, great article. I am surprised at some of the resistance and criticism contained in your readers’ comments. Some of your readers display a need to be right and some cynicism. I recognise these qualitilities as I have a battle with them myself. I have some advice for those readers:
    – don’t criticise information or studies until you have applied the info yourself;
    – information doesn’t have to be 100% true in order to be useful.

Sadly, for most people who have a need to be right, they will dismiss information that is not completely true, to their own detriment. I suspect they also struggle in the markets due to their need to be right. This is something I am working on myself.

For the record, I weight train 3x per week at 6.30 am for 25mins. On those days I am present, calm, centred, and in flow. I make more good decisions than bad. Overall my energy is up and my drive for success is up. i think this COULD be linked to testosterone as i feel more fired up. I don’t need a study to tell me this as I got off my bottom and applied it.

        Hi Zan,

I will be creating a page soon on this site that will give you all the info you need. I was thinking about putting a body transformation section on the site with prizes for 12 weeks body transformations, but I am not sure if it will confuse people regarding what this site is about. Saying that, the secret to wealth is (1) value money, (2) value yourself, (3) value a service that serve lots of people. Self-worth can be created in many ways, and getting in shape is a very powerful way to do it. Most people look in the mirror and dislike themselves..hmmmm. folks let me know if you want that built into the site or not. I will write the next blog about self worth and wealth.

    Hi Patrick,

    that would be great.

Specially 12weeks body tr. because a lot of people, even me, are confused when they start in gym, because they dont know things like what exercises doing, how many repetitions and sets …

    thanks
    cheers

Thanks for another thought provoking blog. It is clear to me that our mental state can be powerfully affected by bio-chemical means and by our own thought-management and alignment of values, goals, and actions. Testosterone and cortisol levels are inputs and outputs of this complex bio-chemical/psychological interaction. For me, the value of this article was to be reminded of my ability to take action and invoke the power of focused physical activity in creating a better mental state, physical state, and wealth state!

  • Carolyn says:

I like the idea of including a transformation section in the blog. I’m looking forward to the blog about self worth and wealth.

I went to the gym today before online webinar and worked out. 30 minutes weight training. 20 cardio. Suprised to see a number of people there at 5am EST. I would like to see a section on health transformation on the blog. Thank You.

Very interesting and motivating. For about a year my company sponsored a bootcamp (mostly weight lifting) twice a week. I can say that I have noticed a big difference since it stopped. I knew that working out was good to reduce my coritsol levels but unaware that it raised my testosterone level and the results of that.
Time to get back to the gym. I understand that the desire to be a better trader is not about having more money to spend but sounds like a small expenditure with a personal trainer could be a good investment and one that would pay for itself. Would love to see a body transformation challenge but one tied to our trading results as a component. Thank you Patrick for all the coaching that you have been providing.
